No appointment required. No pressure. Just your price.

First, don’t overthink it

Most customers count their panes correctly on the first try.

And even if you miss a few, we’ll verify the count when we arrive.

You will never be charged for windows you do not have.

What counts as a window pane?

how to count window panes standard panes
  • A pane is simply each individual piece of glass we clean.

Examples:

• A basic window with one piece of glass = 1 pane
• A window with top and bottom sections = 2 panes
• A sliding window = 2 panes
• A patio door = usually 2 panes

Why do we price this way?

Each separate glass section takes time to:

  • Wash
  • Squeegee
  • Detail edges
  • Dry properly

That is why pane counting is usually the fairest way to quote residential window cleaning.

What about decorative windows?

Some homes have special shapes like:

  • Circle windows
  • Half-moon windows
  • Triangle windows
  • Hexagon windows

Because these usually take more detail work, they are often counted as 2 panes.

That keeps pricing more consistent with the time required.

Windows with grids or dividers

This is where most confusion happens.

Some windows look like they have many panes, but they are actually one solid sheet of glass with decorative grid lines.

Here’s the simple rule:
If the glass is one solid sheet, count it as 1 pane

A window that looks like 12 squares but is one glass sheet:
Counts as 1

A true divided window with 4 separate glass pieces count:

Counts as 4

Small Divided Panes

There is one small exception for very small divided sections.

If the glass sections are smaller than 8″ x 8″, we typically count them as 1 pane for every 3 small sections to keep pricing fair.

So if a window has 12 very small separate glass sections, that may count as 4 panes instead of 12.

If that same window also has an irregular shaped pane on top, it may count a little higher.

The easiest rule to remember:
Count the glass, not the lines.

A divided window with 12 separate small glass pieces under 8″ x 8″.
Count 4 panes

A divided window with 12 separate small glass pieces under 8″ x 8″ and an irregular pane on top.
Count  6 panes

When in doubt:
Count the glass, not the lines.

Sliding patio doors

Most patio doors are:

• 2 large glass sections = 2 panes

Some larger modern patio doors may have 3 sections.

Again, just count each glass panel.

Most homes have 1–2 sliding doors. If you have several large sliders or oversized glass panels, panes after the first four may count as two panes because they take longer to clean.

Why we use pane counting instead of house size

Two homes in Hamilton can be the exact same size and still have very different window cleaning needs.

Example:

Home A:
15 large windows

Home B:
40 small windows

Same size house.
Same size house. Very different amount of work.

Pane counting helps us give you:

  • Fair pricing
  • Accurate quotes
  • No guessing
  • No inflated estimates

You only pay for the actual work required.

The most important thing to know

You do not need to be perfect.

  • Most homeowners are only off by a few panes.

  • We always confirm the count before we start.
  • If anything is different, we adjust it fairly.
  • No pressure. No awkward surprises.
